Berati Tourist Information
Berati is the oldest city in Albania. It is situated between seven hills crossed by the river of Osum. The Emperor Teodosis II called the city Pulcheriopolis, in honour of his sister Pulcheria. Later on it was called Belligrad( white city- from then Berat). In the XI century Berat became an important place for the clashes between Albanians and Bulgarians. Clashes continued also in 1271 against Anguins. The next century started a new era for the city of Berat, under the power of Michael Komneno, Sir of the despotat of Epirus.
In the XIV century it became the center of the feud of the Muzaka, an Albanian Prince. Occupated by Ottomans in 1417 Berat was soon freed by Skenderbeu in 1455. But this freedom was for a short period, Ottomans invaded again the city. In 1768 Ahmet Kurt Pasha rebuilt the city. In 1778 the bridge over the Osum river was built. But in 1834 the city was destroyed again as an answer to the revolts of the population against the regime, leaded by Tafil Buzi and Zenel Gjoleka.
In old times Berat has been the most populated city in Albania and had a great development outside the walls of the Fortress. The first "suburb" was called Varosh, established in 1280.
In 1990 under the control of UNESCO Berat celebrated its 2400 years. Berat has been for many years one of the most populated cities and the people lived out of the castles walls since 1280.
The most important places to visit in Berat are : the Castle of Berat and the Fortess of Berat. A beautiful looking bridge is the bridge over Osum which was built in 1778 by the Ottoman Empire. The Church of Our Lady is a very beautiful location, with fresco's on the inside painted by Onufri and his son Nicola. Also you can visit the Church of S.Maria and the Church of S. Michael.
