Benkovac Tourist Information

BENKOVAC, a town in northern Dalmatia, 20 km northeast of Biograd na Moru (Biograd on the Sea); elevation 179 m; population 3,776. Economy is based on farming, viticulture (grape processing), livestock breeding (purchase of wool and hides) and processing of synthetic materials. Benkovac is located on the road (M29) Zadar - Drnis and on the railroad Zadar - Knin.

It was named after the Croatian dukes of Benkovici, first mentioned in the 15th century. The citadel features a high tower of a quadrangular ground-plan and two corner circular towers. In 1527 it came under the Turks. From the mid-19th century a marketplace developed below the citadel. In the vicinity is also a small church of St. Anthony (1743).

Benkovac, a small town at the intersection of roads in the region of Ravni Kotari, is a transit point for numerous tourists who travel by car from the interior of Croatia to the Adriatic.

In the past, Benkovac was frequented by numerous visitors because of high quality home-made food (wine, prosciutto, fruit). Today Benkovac bears the consequences of the recent war. However, due to the vicinity of the sea and good traffic connections (Zadar, Biograd, Sibenik) a rapid revival of tourism is expected.
