Batina Tourist Information
BATINA, a village and port on the right bank of the Danube in the region of Baranja, 25 km northeast of Osijek; elevation 105 m; population 1,449. The chief occupation is farming. Batina is located on the main road (M17.1) Osijek Batina Bezdan. In 1974 the road bridge over the Danube was built. State border crossing.
A continuity of settlement from the Middle Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age has been discovered on the Gradac hill. Military seals on bricks found on the location of the Roman citadel Ad Militare indicate that a Roman camp must have existed here as early as the end of the 1st century. The foundations of a 1.80-m thick and 15-m long ancient wall have been discovered. A small Baroque chapel was built on the banks of the Danube in 1756, featuring the statue of the patron saint John Nepomuk.
This picturesque village above the Danube, in the immediate vicinity of the large bridge connecting the Croatian Baranja with the region of Backa in Vojvodina (Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia), located at the border crossing, and the beauty of its surroundings attract a number of excursionists. From the elevation Bansko Brdo a nice view is offered on the Danube, the region of Backa, Hungary and the region of Baranja. The vineyards and wine cellars, with one side dug into the hill, represent a special attraction of the region around Batina. The imposing monument (29 m high) commemorating the Battle of Batina, a work by A. Augustincic, was made in the spirit of socialist realism.
The recreational and bathing resort "Zeleni Otok" (Green Island) offers a number of opportunities in the warm part of the year, especially water sports. It is also the centre of the Baranja Art Colony.
