Barichara Tourist Information

Founded in 1714; 120 Km. or 60 miles from Bucaramanga and 30 Km. or 15 miles from San Gil where it takes about 25 minutes on a good road. Barichara is one of the prettiest villages in Colombia. The lovely and well proportioned design and paved streets, its doors and balconies, its mansions and churches have all contributed to the naming of this village as a national monument. The visitor can't help but admire the Cathedral, its columns, the majesty of its altar, products of the architecture and religious art of the XVIII century. The Capilla de Santa Bárbara is another architectural jewel of the period. The cemetery and the chapel of Jesús Resucitado, are famous for their mausoleums and tombstones, carved in stone by the artisans of the area. "La Casa de la Cultura Emilio Pradilla" preserves its furniture and antiques as well as the fossils that were found in surrounding area. Barichara also has maintained the house where Aquileo Parra was born, with its earthen floor and thatched roof. On the outskirts is the natural pool of La Chorrera, a spot for camping and picnics. La Represa del Común, 12 kms. or 6 miles away is another beautiful place for relaxation. With the help of a local guide you can reach the Salto del Mico, the highest waterfall in the country, that falls into the canyon which winds its way through the tropical forest. It is easy to find lodging and excellent typical restaurants. Between Barichara and Guane is an old royal road which in two hours will take you from one town to the other on a delightful trip through remarkable scenery.
