Bakovac Kosinjski Tourist Information
The picturesque valley of the Bakovac stream is one of access ways to Velebit from Lika. The asphalt road ends 2 km behind the village, afterwards the path leads mainly through the forest. It passes by the fresh water springs of Begovaca. The so-called Written Stone is found here, a Latin inscription on the use of the springs in Illyrian-Roman times. A trail then leads all the way to Zavizan.
BAKOVAC KOSINJSKI, a village in Lika, 10 km west of Gornji Kosinj; elevation 507 m; population 372. The village is located on a local road. On the location of Bakovac there was a settlement of the mediaeval Busko clan of Ljupcoc; three plates with Glagolitic inscriptions and the coat of arms of the Frankopan counts were found in the ruins of the old chapel. The church of St. Vitus has a quadrangular sanctuary and a front belfry with a "preslica". The front façade displays a rustically carved lunette, with immured plates with Glagolitic inscriptions and the coat of arms of the Frankopan counts (from the old church). It is supposed that Bakovac was the location of the famous Glagolitic printing-house of Kosinj.
