Bakarac Tourist Information

BAKARAC, a town in the south-eastern part of the Bakar Bay; 24 km southeast of Rijeka. The landscape features gardens and green areas. The town has a nice beach and a campsite; there is also a motel. Farming, fishing and tourism are chief occupations. Bakarac is located on the Adriatic main road (M2, E65).

On Gradac Peak there are the ruins of a Roman fortress - three milestones have been found. In the Middle Ages and later Bakarac served as a port for the Hreljin District. The parish church of Sts. Peter and Paul was built in the 18th century. - In the direction of Bakar is the large area of the so-called Bakar partitions, the terraced structures encircling abandoned vineyards. Near Bakarac are two old wooden tuna-canneries (the last on the Adriatic), which are still being used in tunny-fishing.

Tunny-fishing used to begin with the transportation of fishing nets from Bakarac to Bakar, which became a kind of feast, attracting domestic as well as foreign spectators and tourists. Maintained beaches, natural beauty of the surrounding area, cultural performances and entertainment opportunities in nearby Kraljevica make Bakarac an attractive destination.
