Bad Toelz tourist information

The Isarcity of Bad Tölz has a baroque style and is colourful. Since being awarded the market rights in 1281 Bad Tölz has been growing constantly until today. The beautifully coloured murals are real masterpieces and are typical for the beautiful citizens houses of the Marktstraße. They show bibical motives aswell as the wishes and hopes of the inhabitants and they often also give a sample of the typical bavarian humour.

Places of settlement from the Stone Age, Bronze Age aswell as hillgraves and urnfields show us the willingness of people to become settled in Bad Tölz. Findings from the Hallstatt- aswell as the Laténeage show that a continuous settlement took place in these times. Early-medieval findings give us a clear picture of the prehistoric and early-historical settlement in the area around Bad Tölz.

Only by written sources dating from the end of the 12th century we learn about Hainricus de Tolnze - the name giver for Bad Tölz - and his castle. It was similar to other castles of the Isar area a check point for the river and country routes protecting craftsmen and raftsmen who settled near the river Isar. In 1331 Bad Tölz was bestowed the formal market rights by Emporer Ludwig dem Bayern so that Bad Tölz was now an excommunication market with the right to free citizens´ admission. The economic impetus in the 14th century connected with this right was suddenly interrupted at the middle of 15th century by the big fire in 1453. Most of the Marktstraße was destroyed. The rebuilding started soon afterwards furthered by Duke Albrecht III who also had a new castle erected at another place.

In 1588 we learn that the castle is dilapitated. It was maintained until the 18th century but in 1770 after heavy falls of rain the high tides of the Ellbach river hollowed out the castle ruins and caused the collapse of the remaing walls. At the blossom of the Tölz castle it used to be the residence of male nurses who were appointed by th dukes. The most ountstanding one was Kaspar Winzerer III because it was he who succeeded in taking King Franz I prisoner in the battle of Pavia in 1525.

Another interesting figure of the Tölz history is Johann Jäger. He was a wine landlord from the Marktstraße and one of the leading military leaders, pulling the strings when the farmers went into battle against the Austrians in 1705 at Sendling. This historical incident is better known as the "Sendlinger Christmas Murder". Little later another figure appears who became of great significance for Bad Tölz. His name was Friedrich Nockher and he was a salt officer. In connection with the austrian war of succession in the middle of the 18th century he succeeded to stop the Pandure Trenk from plundering and burning down Bad Tölz by paying several hundreds of guilders. But not only by this "pillage-payment" he became the focus of attention, but also by donating the Kalvarienberg church to the people of Bad Tölz he achieved recognition.
