Bad Salzungen Tourist Information

Bad Salzungen, surrounded by gently undulating hills, was already mentioned in the times of Charlemagne, due to its salt boiling cottages. The salty water (of up to 27%) bubbles out of several springs, which makes Bad Salzungen one of the oldest Salt Health Spas in Germany. It is found in the ideal location between the mountains of the Thuringian Forest and the Rhoen, perfect not only for the ill and convalescent. The main attraction of the town is the historical salt collector, which, during certain periods, used to produce up to 20,000 tons of salt The salt collector is now the foundation of the Health Spa, symbolising a unique blend of traditional healing methods with modern medicine. An idyllic castle pond and beautiful parks invite to leisurely strolls, while the town itself invites with its many historical buildings. In 2000 Bad Salzungen celebrated its 1225th anniversary. The highlight of the celebrations was the inauguration of a new Health Centre with therapy sections, a fitness club, salt-movement pool and sauna. The philosophy of the Spa is based on the ancient Celts, who were the first ones to benefit from the salty springs of Bad Salzungen.
