Avernakų“s length (8km) and hilly terrain characterise the island. There are around 120 inhabitants. Avernakų is one of the few places in Denmark which has preserved its traditional Maypole festivities. On whitsun Saturday maypoles are erected in the villages of Avernak and Munke. This custom, from way back, was probably once a heathen tradition to promote fertility, but is now an enjoyable and amusing event
