Assens Tourist Information

The centre of the market town of Assens is unusually well preserved, and a walking tour of the town has much to offer. A good place to start is the sugar mill, which has been one the region's most important businesses since 1884. From here, you can follow the Millpond cross Strandmøllen, and continue along Damgade, which has been one of the most important routes into town for more than 800 years. In the Middle Ages, the buildings around the church and out to the square were considered the town's finest quater.

At the square, turn left down Willemoesgade, established in the 1880´s, when it became necessary to create a connection to the newly laid railway. The stadion and post office are still here, although the buildings now serve other functions.

Continue down to the harbour, where the ferry to the island of Bågø still sails, and turn right. You will find a statue of the naval hero, Peter Willemoes, as well as a number of historic buildings, including for example the little cookhouse. Sailors had to do their cooking here during the age of sail, because open fires were not allowed on the board the ships tied up at the quay.

Turn right down Strandgadeat the former custom's house. Until 1859, one of the town gates once stretched across the street where Strandporten and Bådsmandsstræde meet. The gatehouse was also a lighthouse, and for many years served as the town's jail as well. Whitin the old city walls lay the post Inn, where royalty and wealthy citizens would wait for their ships to sail on the way to haderslev (Årøsund).

The current 18th century buildings is the home of the Fulton Foundation. In the Middle Ages, there used to be a monastery on the other side of the street called the Helligåndskloster. It was torn down in the 16th cebtury. Continue down atmospheric Ladegårdsgade. Assens has been fortunate to avoid majors fires, and this is why the town has an unusually large number of well-preserved old houses and buildings. At Gåsetorvet, it's possible to take a quick detour down Korsgade to number 11, where you will find one of the town's oldest houses, which may be 450 years old.

Return to Ladegårdsgade, and continue down Baronvej to Nygade, and turn right. The majority of the small, well-preserved houses in the street were originally built by craftsmen and artisans during the 1880's, when the town expanded beyond its original boundaries, but a number of buildings at the southern end housed the Technical School and J. Ernst's silverware factory.

Turn right onto Østergade, which for centuries has been the town's main thoroughfare. Here you will a number of large merchant's courtyards. It is well worth looking around these courtyards, not least Plum's yard, which is part of a very comprehensive range of buildings, including a large wooden warehouse, built in 1915. Østergade 36 is Willemoes' yard, where the naval hero, peter Willemoes was born in 1783. Today you will find a cultural museum, which houses an important art collection, including paintings by the Golden Age artist, Dankvart Dreyer, who was born in the neighbouring house in 1816. Continue over the large square towards Damagde, and turn left down Lille Kirkestræde. From the church, it's easy to find you way back to the sugar mill.
