Asbach-sickenberg Tourist Information

The village was first mentioned already in 1284. It is mentioned as a Parish village in 1569 and has probably been Protestant. The church records start in 1643. In 1872 it is mentioned in the "Statistics of the Protestant Church in the District Cassel" the Community "Asbach, a town of Allendorf with a forestry house at Altenstein of 258 inhabitants, part of the Parish community. Sickenberg is found at 1 hour from Asbach on a steep hill, with the community Hennigerode as part of the Parish community. On 22. October 1978 the church of Asbach was re-consecrated, following extensive restoration works. Its name refers to the times then: "Versöhnungskirche". (of reconsiliation). In the bell tower there are two bells. In one of them the year 1582 has been engraved. In 1779 the old church was taken down and a new one was built in its place. A document, which had been discovered during reconstruction works in 1976, describes the building works. During the process of taking down the church a corner stone was found with the inscription 1581. The Altenstein, a castle ruin, was first mentioned in 1264. According to the document from 12.11.1329 Earl Heinrich II gave the Knight Berthold Eselskopf and his squire Hugo aus der Mark the new House Haus Altenstein and the land at the same building at one half each, as well as the villages Asbach, Sickenberg and Weidenbach im Pfund. Asbach was situated in the inner-German border regions for many years. The Border Museum "Schifflersgrund" reminds the visitor of this period, showing among other things original border complexes.
