Arnstadt Tourist Information
Arnstadt was first mentioned in the deeds in 704, which renders it the oldest town of Thuringia. Several generations of the family Bach lived in Arnstadt, and during his youth Johann Sebastian Bach worked as organist in the church which today bears his name. A particular attraction of the town is the Doll Town “Mon Plaisir” in the New Palais (Palace Museum), created in the first half of the 18th century. This Doll Town gives an in-depth inside into the life of a small royal seat of the Baroque period. The once exceedingly popular Eugenie John “Marlitt” was born in Arnstadt, and also died here. Her sweet novels were set in Arnstadt. The fairy-tale writer Ludwig Bechstein spent his apprentice years in this town and dedicated it a few beautiful poems. Willibald Alexis spent the last years of his life in Arnstadt.
