Armenia Tourist Information
Armenia, known as the "Ciudad Milagro", is the capital of Quindío, state with landscapes of mountains covered with cultivations of coffee, tall palm trees and beautiful coffee plantations which reflect the culture of its people. Among the city's attractions are the Parque Sucre, which has a hundred year old ceiba tree of majestic dimensions; and the Plaza de Bolívar, where the government building is found. Close to Armenia you will find beautiful constructions of bamboo and wood painted in cheerful colors and decorated with tropical plants, a pleasant and peaceful spot. Some of the plantations where you can enjoy the culture of the coffee zone are, Brasilia, Caracolí and La Dulcera. Much colonial architecture is found in the towns surrounding Armenia. This is the case of Calarca, the second city in Quindio which is known for its constructions made of adobe with balconies, doors and windows of fretwork and carved wood. Filandia is famous for its two story Paisa constructions and Pijao won the contest for the "prettiest village in Quindio". Ten minutes from Armenia, in the municipality of Montenegro, you will find the Park-Museo de la Cultura Cafetera, which on its 12 hectares explains everything related to coffee, from its planting to the final product. From its lookout (constructed of bamboo and wood) located at the entrance, you have a marvelous view of the park and of the region. You can take a short excursion through the varied coffee cultivations and those of bamboo; visit a reproduction of a typical house of the region; learn about the funeral rites of the Quimbaya culture; and walk through the Forest of Myths and Legends, a place that recreates historical personages of the zone. Before leaving the Park you must try the varied and delicious beverages prepared with the best coffee in the world.
