Aramac Tourist Information
Aramac was originally called Marathon. Its current name came from the explorer R.R. Mackenzie - initially called R.R. Mac, it gradually changed to its present name. The town was developed in the 1860's and was formally gazetted in 1869. It is the oldest centre of local government in the Central West. The Aramac Tramway operated between 1913 and 1975 and linked the town with the central railway system at Barcaldine. It was closed down on the fcompletion of an all-weather road between the two towns.
