Apollonia Tourist Information
Apollonia was founded in the VIth century b.c. near the Adriatic Sea and the Vjosa river. Invaded and then protected by the Roman Empire Apollonia helped Caesar against Pompeo and then got the name of "free & untouchable" and a certain authonomy, the first and last one of the Roman Empire. The ancient geograph Strabone called Apollonia 'eunomotate' that is well-governed city. Since it's beautiful climate and architecture Apollonia became a very frequented place during the summer by Roman aristocrats. Augustus lingered here for a long time and with great pleasure.
In 1924 a French archaeological research group discovered a greek-style 'necropoli'. Since the great archaeological importance, Apollonia was frequented by many visitors in the years to come but the most part of them took something for their personal collections. After the 2nd World War two Albanian archaeologists, Hasan Ceka and Skender Anamali, restarted searching and made a good work in the configuration of the city.
Apollonia is divided in two complexes: the first was inside a wall of the Vth century b.c., with the ....... of Artemide and the Obeliscus dedicated to Apollo. The second complex is made of a 4 km long wall , three meters high . Some meters away from these two complexes is the Odeon, a knid of theatre with a capacity of 500 people.
The Bouleterion is a particular building half-circle shaped made for assemblee (counsel in ancient Greece). This beautiful building was built in the IInd century b.c.
