Andros Tourist Information

It lies on a peninsula, which leads to a small island with a Venetian castle built on it. It is an impressive town which incorporates the old town with its' narrow cobble-stoned roads with the new town with its' impressive mansions, which were built during the previous century, during the high point of shipping on the island.

For one who travels by foot there are rich sensual stimulants, that constantly fill the range of view with the blue of the sea, the green of the neighboring creeks and the white of the cycladic homes.

The main road, which passes through the town, leads to the sea and to the large square of Afanis Naftis (=missing seaman), which provides a home to the homonymous statue, which was created by the sculptor Mihail Tombros.

The small island where one can find the Venetian castle, is separated from the peninsula of Hora with a narrow strip of sea, with a width of 2-3 meters and it is connected to the town by a stone bridge. In historic times the castle was connected to the peninsula by a removable bridge.

In the old part of town one can find the church of Panagia Palatiani or "Agia Tsoura" with a remarkable wooden carved icon screen. The icon screen of Panagia Theoskepasti is also a wonderful sight to see. At the square of Afanis Naftis one will find the Nautical Museum with its' impressive models of Andriotic ships. On the left and right of the town there stretches the beaches of Nimborio and Paraporti.

In the Kairis Square one can find the Archaeological Museum, donated by Vasilis and Eliza Goulandris and a little down further the Museum of Modern Art, which holds a range of international exhibits and attracts art-lovers and experts in the field from all over the world.

High standard exhibitions are also held in the Foundation of Petros and Marika Kidoniefs. The Foundation has exhibited works of art from the Greek artists Tsoklis, Takis and Pavlou and others. Multilateral activities also are held in the Kairis Library, which contains a collection of rare books from the philosopher Theofilos Kairis. The library holds a large number of old publications and also has a department, which preserves and restores old books.

To the other side there is the port of the town, with a remarkable lighthouse, "Tourlitis". It is an exact reconstruction of the old one made of stone, which has been destroyed in the past. The reconstructions works ended in 1996 with funds coming from Goulandris family, in memory of their daughter Violanto.
