Amacayacu Tourist Information

Located in the middle of the Amazon trapezoid, between the Cotuhé river to the north and the Amazon river to the south, Amacayacu is bordered on the east by the Cabimas and Pamaté streams and on the west by the Amacayacu river from which the Reserve got its name. It consists of 293,500 hectares and an average temperature of 90 º F. It is rich in species of plants and animals. Up to now there have been registered close to 500 species of birds, among which have been counted 11 classes of herons, 150 classes of mammals and two of the four species of aquatic mammals: the manatee of the Amazon and the river dolphin. Fish are also numerous and are a source of food for the habitants of the region. 60 kilometers from Leticia, up the Amazon river, you arrive at the Park visitors center, Yawaé, where there is lodging, a restaurant and a cafeteria. To enable the tourist to better observe the flora and fauna 4 observation platforms have been built. Among the trips that can be taken from the park are visits to the native communities of the Ticunas of San Martín, the Palmeras and Macagua, where you may purchase native handicrafts. These are only 3 of the 14 native tribes which inhabit the Amazon trapezoid.
