Altengottern Tourist Information

The village of Altengottern is found at the left-hand side of the river Unstrut, at 2 km from Großengottern and at 10km from Bad Langensalza and Mühlhausen. Altengottern has had a long and turbulent history. In1997 it celebrated its first millennium, based on its first mentioning in a gift deed by Emperor III. The village of 2km length is characterised by the 2 churches St. Trinitatis and St. Wigberti, as well as the former residential palace of the Barons of Marschall von Altengottern, housing a children’s home today. Agriculture has been the main source of income of the village. It is best known for its vegetable cultivation and sheep breeding. The deposits of high quality clay near the hill “Roter Berg” are mined by the company Creaton, which also provided jobs for many inhabitants. Presently, Altengottern has around 1220 inhabitants. It is a typical residential village and will remain it due to its quiet location. Many new houses are being built, proving the need for quiet living space. The village has a supermarket, a branch of the Sparkasse Bank, a butcher’s, a bakery and 3 restaurants. There is a kindergarten for 56 children, and the village celebrates its annual carnival, shooting festival and village fair. 11 clubs provide an interesting cultural life all year round.
