Altenburg Tourist Information
The municipality Altenburg has been created by the merger of the two communities Altenburg and Fuglau, and now comprises even 5 villages: Altenburg, Burgerwiesen, Fuglau, Mahrersdorf and Steinegg.
The Benedictine monastery Altenburg has been built in 1144 and is regarded as the Baroque jewel of the Waldviertel. Since the year 1994, it has one more attraction to offer to its visitors:
2 monasteries at one spot - the baroque monastery and underneath, the Old Monastery.
The monastery, as we know it today, has its origines in the 17th and 18th century and is a jewel of Baroque architecture. From the beginning of the 60ties, it accommodates the Boys Choirs, representating our home not only in Austria but also abroad with their musical performances.
Also in 2005, you can see the "angels" of the monastery in the course of the special exhibition "Face to face with angels..."! Dive into the DISCOVERY PLACE MONASTERY, into the more than 850 year old history of the monastery Altenburg and embark on a journey into the past.
