Abomey

A palace-city founded in the 16th century by King HOUEGBADJA, Abomey keeps out of its glorious history the remembrances of a matchless value.

In the neighbourhood, the Yèmadjè weavers produce superb tapestries while the sculptors, the forgers and the local jewellers produce craft works of a remarkable fineness.

This Palace nicely restored has been fitted out for guided and commented visits. Not only will the visitor discover relics about recent Kings, but also the history of a dynasty dating back to the late 16th century and whose tragic vicissitudes would have inspired Shakespeare’s dramas.

The visitor will learn about the amazons and the vicissitudes of the reigns marked by endless wars against the Nago people in the East, but also about the splendour of the courts.

The royal Palace of DJIME where the grave of King BÊHANZIN is watched by princesses up to now.

This Palace is also the vivid evidence of the diversity of Dahomean arts, as it keeps the specimen of all craft productions in Benin .

During their eras, the kings Ghézo and Glèlè allowed the development of an in-the-court art which, nowadays, has made Abomey one of the richest African museums which incorporates : sculpted low reliefs, statues, furniture, thrones, sceptres, tapestries, embroideries, basketworks, objects in brass and bronze.
