Aakirkeby Tourist Information

Without any ado you can make a stop in Aakirkeby. Trade, cosiness and history attract other natives of Bornholm and guests from the whole island.

The history is about culture, church and power, because here you find the presumed oldest church, the big Aa Church. It was erected already during the 12th century and in the following years the church was the centre of the power of the island and until 1776, you here found the landsting of the island.

The history, which is older than the church, is about the nature – the whole nature of Bornholm and the almost inconceivable process, which has created Bornholm through the last million of years. You can experience the history right here in Aakirkeby at the experience centre NaturBornholm, which opened in 2000 on the southern outskirts of the town.

Cosiness and trade are connected in Aakirkeby. Especially around the market place the outdoor cafes and the shops in the old houses contribute to the environment. In recent years, an active chamber of commerce has worked with an embellishment of the market place and a gentle renovation of the old buildings. This has been such a success that the bronze gooses of the Bornholm sculptor Paul Ranslet have perched here on the market place. If they fly up it is probably to greet their “big brother”, the enormous green tree frog of Paul Ranslet, which bids a hearty welcome to the guests outside NaturBornholm.

Tatra, NSU, Adler, BSA, BMW, Jaguar, Porsche etc.! If you would like to see cars and motor cycles you have to nip into the Bornholm Automobile Museum on Grammegårdsvej a bit south of Aakirkeby. Here, you find a large collection of beautifully restored old cars and a complete garage from the old days. You can also experience tractors, agricultural implements, toys and the first TV of the island. Toot, honk for a both serious and entertaining museum!
