Hotel Helmhaus description
The Helmhaus Hotel, located at the old embarkation point (German Schifflände) at the river Limmat, is one of the oldest guesthouses in town. Centuries ago, this was the place where goods and pilgrims left the boats and entered the town of Zurich. Many a traveler was looking for shelter (German Helm) and the comfort of local hospitality.
The house is first mentioned in the chronicles of 1356, then still carrying its old name Rosslyn (Eng. foal). Its owner, the Knight of Wollerau, was most probably employed with the abbot of Einsiedeln. The most famous among the Rosslyn hosts was Oswald Reinhard, whose daughter married Zurich's reformer Ulrich Zwingli in 1522. In remembrance of her birth, a memorial plaque has been placed in front of the Helmhaus.
During Zurich's iconoclasm at the beginning of the 19th century, the cunning principal of the Grossmünster cathedral saved the well-known altarpiece of the artist Hans Leu from destruction by making it part of the Rosslyn's paneling. Accidentally, it was rediscovered years later.
During its moving history, the house has seen many different owners coming and going. After 1833 it was the annex of the Du Lac Hotel next door, where you find the Italian restaurant Molino of today. It was rebuilt in 1953 and accommodated apartments, offices and the café Sultan on the ground floor. In 1961 it was reconstructed and became the Mondial Hotel. Ever since its takeover by the family-run Hostelia Inc. in 1970 the hotel carried its current name Helmhaus.
In 1990 the owner decided to renovate the hotel completely. A diligent renovation should account for both the house's original historic architecture and the changing needs of present-day guests. The façade, four floors, and supporting structures were all redone and air conditioning and fire protection integrated. The reception was remodeled in 2000, the breakfast room and the lobby one year later.
