Vastervik tourist information
Västervik is one of the oldest towns in Sweden, mentioned as early as 1275 in a deed of gift signed by King Magnus Ladulås. At that time, however, the town was situated where the village of Gamleby ("Old Town") now stands. In the 1360's Duke Albrecht of Mecklenburg had a castle built on a small island at the mouth of the Bay of Gamleby as a guard for the long navigable bay. The Swedish King Eric of Pomerania made out a charter for the inhabitants of Västervik, giving them free land and certain reduction of taxes for moving and settling down on the mainland near the castle.
The inhabitants were however not particularly pleased with the new place for their town, for they were often exposed to attacks by enemies. The Danes, especially, ravaged and burnt the town many times. And because of wars and fires Västervik has got no buildings left from the Middle Ages except for St. Gertrud's Church, part of which dates back to the time of the foundation of the town in 1433.
Today Västervik is a charming seaport which sizzles with life in the summer. The municipality of Västervik comprises not only the town itself, but also the surrounding district, which is named Tjust. The district of Tjust is wellknown for its beautiful and varied scenery.
