Nykoping tourist information
Nyköping is a modern town on the coast, at one hour's travel by car or train from Stockholm, and situated 30 minutes north of Norrköping.
About 35 000 people live in the city centre and 50 000 in the municipality as a whole. The villages that surround Nyköping are Stigtomta, Nävekvarn, Jönåker, Tystberga, Stavsjö and Ålberga. Each one with its own character and advantages. Nävekvarn lies by the coast, Tystberga is by the motorway, Stigtomta lies in the middle of the cultural landscape of Södermanland. The municipal tax rate is among the lowest in Sweden - Nyköping is not a tax haven, but offers good service at a good price.
Nyköping grows along the waterfront, and several building companies are planning and building housing estates overlooking the sea. Downtown, the shops and restaurants are concentrated along the High Street (Storgatan), about one kilometre long. During summer the harbour wakes to life, with restaurants and handicraft stores by the quay. A couple of bigger shopping malls lie at the northern and southern entrances to the town, within comfortable driving distance. The Sports and Fair Centre of Rosvalla keeps growing, and offers both an ice rink and a multi-purpose hall for sports, conferences and concerts.
It is easy to get to Nyköping, and simple to travel further on. The motorway sweeps by just on the outskirts of Nyköping, from Skavsta airport you can reach destinations in Europe quickly and easily (the low-rate flights are expanding at Skavsta!). The trains stop twenty-six times each day, very handy if you commute to Stockholm.
Nyköping is flanked by the archipelago on one side and the cultural landscape of Södermanland on the other. Södermanland is rich in golf courses - Ärila golf course between Nyköping and Oxelösund is expanding to 36 holes, and at Jönåker golf course you can play a game of 18 holes. Four nautical clubs, 1 000 kilometres of walking paths, 500 kilometres of riding paths and 700 kilometres of bicycling paths are some of the reasons why we spend so much of our free time outdoors!
