Linkoping
Linköping has old traditions as a centre for administration as well as military organization. Its history as a modern industrial city goes back to 1937, when SAAB started air plane manufacture in a plant in the suburbs.
The University and Institute of Technology have meant a great deal for the development of many spin-off companies. Next door to the University is Mjärdevi Science Park, where a large number of computer and electronics enterprises have become established.
The large University Hospital is a research and teaching hospital with close contact with the University of Health. The hospital is the regional hospital for the southeastern medical service region in Sweden which encompasses three county councils (Östergötland, Jönköping, Kalmar) with about 1 million inhabitants.
Despite its growth, Linköping has retained its character as a long established seat of learning and culture. The outdoor museum Old Linköping is one of the most attended tourist attractions in Linköping. The only Air Force Museum in Sweden is established in Malmen.
