Jokkmokk tourist information
People have lived in the Jokkmokk area for more than 6,000 years. Magnificent surroundings envelop the community - high fells in the west, deep virgin forests in the east and innumerable lakes, rivers and waterways. Its unique alpine environments and a vital Sami culture, which have given Laponia world-heritage status, are treasures that will be preserved for all time. Each year, tens of thousands of visitors come from near and far to visit Jokkmokk's exotic, world-renowned winter market, which soon celebrates its 400th anniversary. Barely six thousand people live in the large municipality of Jokkmokk. That's 0.3 residents per square kilometre. Unique conditions and richly varied environments make Jokkmokk an eldorado for adventure seekers. Mountains and forests, wildlife and excellent fishing waters provide a good living environment for local residents. Jokkmokk is also noted as a major producer of hydropower.
