Falun tourist information
The seat of the provincial government of Dalarna is Falun. More than 52 000 people live in the city. It is the cultural and administrative centre of Dalarna. Dalarnas Museum, the museum of culture and history of Dalarna, is situated in Falun.
The history of Falun is the history of its copper mine. Very early, this settlement near the mine was an important centre of industry and trade. The mine itself, open to the public, is a popular tourist attraction. In the districts Elsborg, Gamla Herrgården and Östanfors, old wooden homesteads of the miners have been preserved. These areas are called " The Town of Wood " and they have great cultural value, representing a phase in human progress.
Falun is famous in Sweden for its sausage, Falukorv (Falun Sausage). It is produced of beef, veal and lean pork. Falukorv is probably the dominant type of sausage in Sweden.
The classical symbol of Falun is the Maid of Falun, a wooden doll turned on a lathe and painted Lugnet, the Sport- and Recreation area, supplies a wide range of recreation both summer and winter. The economic life of the city is based on administration and service but there are also extensive industrial activities in the municipality.
