Colon Hotel description
Welcome to the Colon Hotel in Barcelona - Overlooking Barcelona Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter, this hotel is a short walk from Plaza Catalunya, seven blocks from Las Ramblas, and one km (one half-mile) from the beaches. The hotel’s La Carabela serves Mediterranean-themed specialties such as paella Parellada and features a terrace café overlooking the Gothic spires of Catedral de Barcelona. The 145 air-conditioned guestrooms feature traditional furnishings, satellite TV with pay movies, radios, minibars, bathrobes and slippers, and high-speed Internet access.
What to expect: The hotel, built in 1951, enjoys one of the best locations in the city looking straight on to Barcelona cathedral right in the city center. It is within easy walking distance of La Ramblas and, therefore, is a favorite with leisure travelers, especially couples and city breakers. The marble and hardwood lobby provides an atmosphere of peace and quiet and a haven from the hustle and bustle outside.
Amenity highlights: There are two meeting rooms at the hotel with capacities of 150 and 60 persons respectively. There is also the La Carabela de Colon Restaurant, which serves buffet style breakfast and à la carte lunches and dinners.
Insider tip: There is a Christmas market every year in the square surrounding the cathedral. It draws in visitors from all over Spain with plenty of local specialties on sale and gift ideas for the festive period. Entry is free and it is open daily during December. In the warmer months there are live concerts and special events in the square.
There are two meeting rooms, the Miro, which can cater for up to 60 delegates, and the Marina, which can hold up to 150. They also connect and can be used together for larger functions.
The hotel has 145 guestrooms, all of which are decorated in bright colors with wooden headboard units with integral bedside tables, two large luggage racks, satellite television and small desks with stools. Separate seating areas have upholstered chairs and translucent plastic tables. Bathrooms feature marble tiled floors, large mirrors, bidets and shower and bath tub combinations.
La Carabela de Colon - The hotel’s restaurant is in the basement, serving Mediterranean cuisine. Lunch and dinner are available both a la carte and on a set menu basis. There is an adjacent breakfast room. The kitchen also serves the terrace café upstairs that overlooks the cathedral. Sandwiches are available and items from the full menu when the kitchen is not too busy. Starters include Chicken Soup and Norwegian Smoked Salmon, while main items feature Hake with Clams, Grilled Sole and Salted Cod with Prawns in Garlic.
