Edinburgh tourist information

If it's happening, it's happening here - and don't just take our word for it. It's not long since Britain's Observer newspaper found that Edinburgh was one of the very few cities in the country which could really claim to be alive for 24 hours a day.

There's so much to choose between, from mountain biking or more leisurely countryside pursuits, to the thrills of the city. You can pick where to eat and what to do at almost any time of day - from a fantastic selection of venues covering the arts and music and all the touristy things you could ever want to do, to clubs and pubs and cafes, open from the early hours until, well, the early hours!

With so much on offer, choosing is often the hardest decision you'll have to make here. From museums and galleries in the city to the raucous fun of tree-top adventure parks in the countryside, there's something for every taste and every age-group - and this is a great area for kids!

It's astonishing what's crammed into Edinburgh. For its size, the city has more places to eat than any other in the world and the choice - from Mexico to Japan - is extraordinary. In contrast, along the East Lothian coast you'll often find restaurants and pubs which specialise in local seafood and other delicious fresh produce.

Edinburgh, famously, is bursting with pubs and cafes - they're part of a culture which has made the city renowned for hundreds of years, and they're still here today, buzzing with life and full of character.

In a world of chain stores, Edinburgh is an antidote to the bland and the over-familiar. You'll find all sorts of specialities and eccentricities amongst the traders of the Royal Mile and Victoria Street, and an amazing choice at shopping villages such as Fenton Barns and Freeport.

There's an unrivalled range of quality Scottish merchandise: whisky and woollens, food and antiques. And look out for more unusual gifts - maps and prints, fossils, kites and candles.

The Lothian Shopmobility scheme provides people who have limited mobility with the means to shop and use facilities with the maximum independence.

Edinburgh provides a marvellous year-round feast of arts and entertainment.

The city's theatre and concert halls are home to famous and innovative companies and orchestras, while ballets, operas, West End plays and musicals are staged here throughout the year. Lovers of film find the city a natural home, with everything from repertory cinemas to multiplexes. And while there's plenty of live music in the city you can enjoy jazz with a difference aboard a boat on the Forth estuary.

Whatever your sport, you'll find Edinburgh and the Lothians fair game. With some of finest international venues in the country and an incredible range of facilities, there is an enormous choice.

How much choice? There are swimming pools and sports centres, and anything between hi-tec games zones and Europe's largest dry ski slope. In the countryside you'll find quad-biking or shooting, archery and trekking, seaside strolls or 18-holes.

There is a wide variety of accommodation available in Edinburgh and the Lothians to suit all tastes and budgets. From family run guest houses, luxury hotels, private houses/bed & breakfasts, self catering accommodation and caravan and camping parks and hostels.

Edinburgh's coast and countryside offer a beautiful backdrop to the towering grace of the capital.

This is a historic setting, with castles, great houses and miles of glorious coastline. It's also the ancient home of the game of golf. You can find some of the great links and parkland courses of the world here. But trails and parkland open up the countryside for everyone - from picnickers on the fine golden beaches, to walkers high in the Pentland Hills.
