The landscape around the city is dotted with lakes that are perfect for swimming, sailing or canoeing. Numerous trails are perfect for hiking and bicycling. And, along the way, beautifully preserved historic castles, as well as the more recent remains of Hitler's Wolf's Lair wait to be explored.
Within the city itself, the medieval Olsztyn castle is extremely well preserved. It was here, in 1521, that the famous Polish astronomer Nicholaus Copernicus commanded the castle's defense against the marauding German Teutonic Knights. Copernicus was the administrator of the Warmia Cathedral Church and, while living here, he designed a sundial for the church gallery that has been used to date. The castle also hosts the Museum of Warmia and Mazury. The museum boasts extensive archeological, ethnographic and natural science ccllections as well as documents of the 19th century Polish national revival.
