Ketrzyn tourist information
Kętrzyn – one of the biggest towns in the Masurian Lake District. The town was founded near the Teutonic Knights’ castle in the first half of the 14th century in the place of the Prussian settlement of Rast. Kętrzyn was one of the so called colonial towns of the Teutonic Order. Its purpose was to provide shelter to the village inhabitants in wartime. The town’s low buildings are dominated by the huge Gothic castle of the Teutonic Knights dating back to 1370, rebuilt in the 17th century and now partially reconstructed. Today a museum. One of the precious monuments is the fortified church dating back to the turn of the 15th century with the 16th-century vault surrounded by defensive walls and incorporated into the fortification of the town. The main tourist attraction: the defensive St Geaorge’s church. Nearby, in Gierłoż, Hitler’s former wartime headquarters.
