Sandnes tourist information

"The town lies sheltered between the hills at the end of the Gandsfjord clay strand. Beautiful it is, even if you think it small, the Gateway to the enchanting Jæren."

Sandnes is located at the head of the Gandsfjord, with the open landscape of Jæren to the south and west, Stavanger to the north and, to the east, the neighbouring municipality of Gjesdal and the start of the dramatic Fjord Norway. Large natural deposits of clay made it possible to establish an extensive brickworks and pottery industry during the 1800s. It is thanks to the efforts of the brick workers that the town has grown to become the city we know today. The manufacture of bicycles has helped put the city on the map in more recent times. Today we are proud of our active and vital petroleum-related industry, professional research community, computer industry and skilful business community. Sandnes is a modern and rapidly expanding city emphasising refreshing outdoor experiences, good shopping opportunities and cultural events for its visitors.

Sandnes is the best city in Norway for bicycle riders and hikers. Miles and miles of bicycle paths. And Norway's best bicycle route, the North Sea Cycle Route, passes through Sandnes. Sandnes was the first city to establish its own city bicycle scheme as an alternative to motoring downtown. In Downtown Sandnes there are 200 city bicycles that can be used free of charge for city excursions. For hikers there are plenty of opportunities. Great tracks whether you like walking in the woods, by a lake, or reaching one of the exiting peaks. Well-marked trails and easily accessible.

Sandnes is a natural transportation node - it's quick and convenient to get here. The Jærbanen railway, Highway E39 and the guest harbour down by the fjord are intimately linked to the city centre, while Stavanger Airport (Sola) is only 15 minutes away. The scenic Suleskarveien mountain road, Ryfylke's excellent network of ferries and express boats, and the North Sea Road along the coast line, all bring you closer to the country you want to explore. You decide the tempo and how long to enjoy a relaxed stay in the Sandnes region!
