Ålesund has a beautiful setting across several islands stretching out into the sea, and is situated at the very entrance of the world famous Geirangerfjord. The town has a unique appeal to travellers and tourists, providing a wide range of sights and activities.
Above all Ålesund is internationally renowned for its unique architecture in the Art Nouveau style. The town was devastated by fire a winter's night in 1904, laying 850 houses in ashes and leaving 10.000 people homeless. During a remarkably short period of time, the new Ålesund was rebuilt in the unique architectural style, especially significant from 1890-1910, with a myriad of turrets, spires and medieval ornaments. A stroll through the town centre reveals a town of colourful and charming architecture.
The Art Nouveau Centre (opens June 2003) is located in a beautiful Art Nouveau building, and portrays the unique position Ålesund has in Norwegian architectural history. Its significance is confirmed through participation in a European network of Art Nouveau.
The town mountain Aksla offers breathtaking views across the town, the islands, the mountains and the fjords.
One of the largest aquariums in Northern Europe, The Atlantic Sea-Park, is located in Ålesund. Built into the coastal landscape, facing the mighty ocean, it provides an insight into the multitude of life beneath the waves.
The Sunnmøre Museum comprises the open-air museum featuring various types of farmhouses and boathouses, which have been reassembled here from the region and displayed in attractive surroundings. The museum also houses a variety of boats reflecting the importance of the region as a shipbuilding centre, where the most reliable vessels along the coast originated.
The Aalesunds Museum gives a vivid insight into the history of Ålesund. The permanent exhibitions are devoted to the great town fire in 1904 and the rebuilding in the unique architectural style of Art Nouveau, as well as the development of the town as a fishing and shipping port. Important features of Ålesund's maritime traditions are also presented at the Fisheries Museum.
