MANAGUA The capital of Nicaragua is a vibrant city that is living a very fast growing process.
Managua is located on the southern coast of Lake Managua and around the beautiful Tiscapa Lagoon. If you head towards the lake on Bolívar Avenue, you will come across Managua’s cultural center. You can visit the “Parque Central”, the “Plaza de la República”, the amazing ruins of the “Santiago Cathedral" on the East, the “Palacio Nacional de la Cultura” on the South and the new President's House on the North. You can also visit the “Museo Nacional”, the Biblioteca Nacional as well as many other cultural institutions and collections. North of the Palacio de la Cultura is the Cultural Center of Managua, where you will find arts and crafts, galleries and exhibits of great interest. The “Teatro Nacional Rubén Darío”, named after one of the most famous poets of Latin America, lies between the Plaza de la República and Managua Lake, here you will also find the beautiful marble carved Rubén Darío fountain, the Simón Bolívar statue and the Parque de La Paz with is giant needle.
"Las Huellas de Acahualinca” is also an interesting and educational museum you must visit. It is the most important archaeological site of Nicaragua where 9000-year-old footprints were found, giving testimony of human presence in Managua and Central America during pre-historic times. Go to the top of the Loma de Tiscapa (Tiscapa Hill) and enjoy a great view of Managua and near volcanoes, specially at sunset time. On the other side of the Tiscapa Lagoon, running southward, is Rubén Darío Avenue, which will take you directly towards the “Nueva Catedral de la Purísima Concepción” and the “Fuente Rubén Darío”. Specially beautiful at night, this fountain has three levels of more than 100 water jets. It marks the main intersection of the new Managua and the road leading to the cities of “Masaya” and “Granada".
Other places to visit in Managua are its colorful markets, especially the “Mercado Huembes” with its large selection of crafts and ceramics. Two main festivals make the city come alive: The “Festival de Música y Juventud” (March) and the “Fiestas Agostinas” (August). On December you can also enjoy the Inmaculate Conception Celebrations
On Wednesday's nights visit the Restaurant Mi Pueblo (Come to my Town) where the show Venga a mi Pueblo takes place. Enjoy the typical food while different folkloric groups perform their shows and do not forget to buy a beautiful handicraft.
