Amstelveen tourist information
Amstelveen literally means “peat land on the River Amstel”; this river played a crucial role in connecting Amsterdam to the rest of Holland. Wealthy merchants from Amsterdam built their country manors on this gentle river. Today, three country estates remain on the River Amstel. However, only the park of Wester-Amstel is currently accessible to the public
Amstelveen has evolved into a mature city with great recreational possibilities, including the Amsterdamse Bos (Forest of Amsterdam), the unique “heemparken” (gardens for indigenous flora), various moorlands and fens. Fans of modern art will be genuinely impressed with the Cobra Museum of Modern Art. The Cobra collection includes works of Appel, Constant, Corneille, Brands, Rooskens and Alechinksy.
There is a permanent display of the collection’s top works and a number of pieces on loan. Visit the Amsteltuin (Amstel Garden) or Museum Jan van der Togt if you need another shot of culture. The Gemeentelijk Expositiecentrum Aemstelle (Communal Exhibition Centre Amstel) offers an interesting display of Amstelveen’s history. And fashion addicts can visit Hendrikje, a museum showing how western handbags evolved over the last four centuries. The fresh, newly renovated centre of Amstelveen consists of a modern indoor shopping centre with a futuristic library, numerous terraces and a large Bijenkorf (the Dutch version of Harrod’s or Macy’s). Amstelveen is also equipped with a theatre offering a varied programme of quality entertainment: stage productions, concerts, film and ballet. Amstelveen: a rich choice for everyone!
