Amersfoort tourist information

Amersfoort is the only town in Holland with a medieval old city quarter that is largely intact. It is also the birthplace of the artist Piet Mondrian (1872-1944). In 1994, the 50th anniversary of his death, the Mondrian House was opened in his honor. While most of his works are displayed in The Hague, Amsterdam, Otterlo and New York, the new gallery will present exhibitions concerning his early life. A double defense ring of canals circles the town’s attractive center.

There are a number of sights worth visiting in this picturesque town, and they include the Muurhuizen (wall houses) which date from the late Middle Ages, and the delightful interiors of the Gothic Saint Joriskerk church and the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk (Church of Our Beloved Lady). The Muurhuizen, or wall houses, are typical for Amersfoort. These houses were built on the location of the first original defense ring around the city. This belt was broken down when a second, wider belt was erected around Amersfoort. The stones were used to build the wall houses. The Kamperbinnenpoort at the end of the Langestraat is the oldest of the town gates. The Koppelpoort, a water and land gate at the north of the town, dates from the 14th century.
