Located 100 km south of Can Cun, Akumal is a small resort community of hotels, villas, condominiums, dive shops and restaurants centered around one of the most beautiful beaches on the Quintana Roo coast. Calm, shallow Akumal bay is a perfect vacation spot for children.
The close proximity to archeological sites and other points of interest make it a geographically ideal starting point for adventures. For the less adventurous or those who simply desire a break from the fast lane, Akumal offers as many amenities as one could ask of a vacation paradise.
Giant sea turtles can be seen in Akumal bay and Yal-Ku lagoon year round but are most prominent in nesting season which includes the months of May through October.
Turtle watch programs are underway in Akumal through Centro Ecologico Akumal (CEA) vicinity to protect these creatures from poachers and help recover the population which has been pushed to the brink of extinction by over harvesting in previous years.
