Sliema Malta

In the Sliema area one finds several fortifications. Grand Master Martino de Redin built the famous tower “Torre di San Giuliano”, from which the main street took its name and leads to the pictorial village of St. Julians.

The last fortification built by the Order of the Knights of St John was during Grand Master Emmanuel de Rohan's reign and is situated on Dragut's edge (Fort Tigne').

In 1872 the fortification in Ghar id-Dud was built. This fortification has got a unique military Gothic architecture. Between 1876 and 1884 Fort Cambridge was built in the Sliema area.

Sliema has grown impressively and has a population of over 13,000 inhabitants. In Sliema one finds four parish churches each dedicated to a different patron saint. The mother church, Stella Maris was set up on the 25th December 1878 during Bishop Carmelo Scicluna's reign (1875-1888). After Some time Benedictine Bishop Mauro Caruana (1915-1943) noticed that Sliema had grown bigger and hence he set up two other parish churches. On the 24th September 1918, the Franciscan Friars Minor of the order of The Sacred Heart of Jesus where given a parish church. The same Bishop, on the 24th November 1940 granted detachment from the mother church, the church dedicated to Saint Gregory the Great which became a parish church. During Archbishop Michael Gonzi's pastoral reign (1954-1976) the fourth parish church was established. With an official notice on the 18th April 1973, the Sanctuary dedicated to "Gesu Nazzarenu" became a parish church run by the Dominican Friars.

During the early sixties, Sliema was the first town to develop the idea of a tourism industry, which had to become a vital income for Malta's economy. Many hotels and catering and entertainment establishments were built which turned Sliema into one of the most commercial and tourist towns in Malta. To date Sliema boasts of over 800 commercial establishments, sixty of which are hotels and guest houses.
