Salima tourist information
Salima lies 100kms east of Lilongwe on the M5. Nearby Chipoka is a major port Lake Malawi shipping. In Salima, there are banks, a pharmacy, supermarkets and shops selling household and personal goods and a bustling market. There is a Police station, a post office, a hospital and filling stations.
There is a variety of accommodation, some with restaurants and bars. There is a bus station and many mini buses call here. There is also an airstrip.
Visitors mainly come to Salima to access the lakeside areas which include an international hotel with an excellent camping site, many lodges and resthouses and an interesting tropical fish exporter, who also offers very good accommodation, at Kambiri Point in nearby Senga Bay. There are also many private cottages around the bay.
Restaurants are varied in quality and amenities with most catering for the low budget visitor, although one easily accessible restaurant offers reasonably priced very good food.
Boats can be hired to visit the offshore islands, many of which are very beautiful and the scuba diver or snorkeller will find many varieties of tropical fishes to see.
