Mzuzu is the main city in the Northern region and is a quiet, pretty place sporting a newly opened University.

There is an international standard hotel and several smaller establishments catering to visitors and residents. Also present are most of the facilities the visitor would expect to find in a small city, such as banks, supermarkets, a market and many shops and fuel stations.

Nearby visitor attractions are Nyika Plateau, where there is a high class Safari Camp offering good game viewing, horse riding and hiking, Vwaza Marsh game, where a newly opened Safari Camp operates and, to the north is the historic Livingstonia Mission.

There is much agriculture around Mzuzu, mainly in tea, coffee and fish farming. To the south of Mzuzu is the Viphya pine forest, said to be the worlds largest man made forest.
