Jurmala tourist information

Throughout this century, Jurmala has been Riga's playground, from the elegant days of the 1930's to the years of occupation. Jurmala was also the ultimate destination for the Soviet Union's elite retirees. Countless military officers collected their pensions on this small peninsula from Lielupe to Vaivari. You too can explore beautiful beaches, soothing spas and seafood restaurants.

Good news! Jurmala's main pedestrian street, Jomas iela, has had its ugly Soviet concrete slabs replaced by colourful bricks.

It might cheer you up to know that the beaches at Majori and Bulduri have been awarded the coveted mark of any self respecting beach community worth its weight in tourist dollars, the prestigious Blue Flag. Although there are nearly 30 criteria that a beach must fulfil, the main points are water quality, safety, environmental management and access to information and all important toilet facilities. Although access to beer is not on the list, Jūrmala's beaches meet this demand in spades. The beaches in Liepāja and Ventspils also fly Blue Flags.
