Salsomaggiore Terme tourist information
Even today, in the subsoils of Salsomaggiore there are large basins of salsobromoiodic water, from which only salt for cooking used to be extracted. In fact, it once provided a salt resource for the Dukes of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla. The Salsamaggiore spa was founded in 1839 when the medical officer Lorenzo Berzieri discovered its therapeutica properties and used them sucessfully to treat a little girl, Franchina Ceriatai. Berzieri's experiment was controlled by the medical studies of the Faculty of Medicine at Parma. In the early 20th century, Salsomaggiore became one of the most fascinating European spa towns. Heads of State, writers, artists, fine singers and film stars, football and cycling champions find the treatment and quiet relaxation of a restful stay beneficial. There are some important names among the golden register of illustrious guests. Famous writers have stayed here, from D'Annunzio to Ada Negri, Bacchelli, Ungaretti and Quasimodo; the spa has seen such guests as Verdi, Puccini and Toscanini let alone famous singers: Caruso, Bergonzi, Renata Tebaldi and Luciano Pavarotti, and film stars and cycling champions include: Bartali, Gimondi and Adorni. Salsomaggiore Terme stands on the gently undulating green hills in northern Italy at an altitude of 160m, in an easily reached suggestive and picturesque position, far from the industrial centres. The mild and constant climate and the iodic vapour filled air makes it the ideal place for a healthy and pleasant stay. The unspoilt surroundings, the regular artistic, recreative and social events make it the ideal place for a tranquil holiday.
