Cortona destination reviews

Ian Smith has been in Cortona

Cortona is easy to get to then, like all hilltop towns, you'll have to leg it around the town. Still, that's why we go to these places - no traffic! The Piazza della Republica is the main square and is an active meeting place and the biblical university sited less than 100 metres away sees that it has a youthful flavour about it. Though there are no churches of the ilk of those found at Orvieto or Siena, there are still significant ones to see. The one that you circle en route to the town is Madonna del Calcinaio, a gem of Renaissance architecture designed by the man who reputedly invented the land mine! Its streets twist and wind in typical hilltop town manner and there are many nooks and crannies to peer into. The Via Nazionale is one of the main thoroughfares to head towards where, in addition to the tourist information centre, there are plenty of shops and cafes. My favourite spot to eat though was at the Piazza Garibaldi, one of the places to park your car before you enter through the ancient portals. From the restaurant there are sublime views over the valley below with the arrow straight road to Perugia disappearing into the distance. On a spring day with the cherry blossoms shining and sipping on a cup of tea in the just-warm sunshine, it's not hard to take!
