Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands. It is an island of contrasts, beautiful golden beaches and verdant slopes, but also Ainos the highest mountain that boasts a unique, dense black fir-forest and steep cliffs plunging into the sea. Kefalonia has hundreds of picturesque villages and small towns; its main attraction is the traditional village of Fiskardo Also worth visiting is Assos village, the Drogarati cave with its numerous stalactites and stalagmites, as well as the remarkable Melissani cave, more than 3km in length. The Capital and the main port of Kefalonia since 1757 is Argostoli, which is built on the inner coast of its peninsula.
