A journey back into the Middle Ages for everyone interested in history. Otto the Great’s heritage is still evident in many places throughout the city. You will see the stone sarcophagus of the emperor and his wife in the cathedral, together with a stone sculpture of the famous imperial couple. On the cathedral square you will see the remains of his Kaiserpfalz palace, and on Alter Markt square you can admire the equestrian statue of the great emperor, the Magdeburger Reiter. From 27 August – 2 December you can also visit the Council of Europe exhibition Otto the Great – Magdeburg and Europe, with 600 original exhibits from the age of Otto. Walking tour or coach tour. On the Trail of Otto von Guericke Have you heard of the Magdeburg hemispheres experiment? Otto von Guericke, the inventor of the vacuum pump, was born in Magdeburg 400 years ago. In 2002, the city is going to mark his 400th birthday with many interesting events and celebrations. Guericke was also a mayor, a diplomat and a natural scientist. On the tour you will see the places associated with his life and work on Alter Markt square before the Town Hall, in the Lukasklause, the Otto von Guericke Museum and his grave in St John’s church.
