Goerlitz tourist information
Görlitz is located at a longitude of 15°, which makes it the easternmost city in Germany and puts it at the eastern tip of the four German municipalities on this tongue of land. This former trading centre is now a modern city on the threshold of the 21st century at the place where the borders of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic meet. The riches that Görlitz enjoyed in Medieval times thanks to the Via Regia trade route are evident by the lovingly restored buildings. The city’s places of interest include, without doubt, the City Hall Steps, which date back to 1537/39, the "Oberlausitz Library of Science, one of the most beautiful European libraries, the "Holy Grave " a true-to-life replica of the grave in the holy city of Jerusalem, the biggest late-gothic hall church in eastern Saxony, the Church of St. Peter and Paul, with the sun organ built by Eugenio Casparini and Trinity Church. Art Noveau buildings make an enchanting contrast to the romantic flair of the historic old city. It ha a total of 3,500 monument protected buildings dating back to practically all epochs. Visitors can sample traditional Silesian food and beers in the old city’s cosy cellars and first-rate restaurants.
