Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl description

At the start of the 19th century the Bader family from Tyrol set up a scythe forge on the site of the current Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl. They took advantage of the many springs that rise in this sunny mountain slope and supplied water to the hotel until 1982. With the growth of tourism in Garmisch-Partenkirchen the smithy became an inn and the guests were taken on rides in horse-drawn carriages. In 1890 the tourist café became the Palast Hotel and from the very start always housed national and international nobility. After all that is how the hotel had been designed - large south-facing rooms for the ladies and gentlemen and rooms for their servants opposite. The hotel was not damages in the First World War. The new regulars were industrial magnets from the textile and porcelain industries, who for their part brought life to the hotel with their dazzling balls. During the hotel´s heyday the Palast Hotel became the Golf Hotel. A generous donation by Mr. Bader enabled the establishment of a golf course. The hotel guests enjoyed exclusive bathing at the Schmoelzer Lake and two fishing ponds provided fresh trout for the hotel´s kitchen. The Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl is situated at the entrance to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany's top winter sports location, on a sunny hill. Tradition and modern comfort combine charmingly with the impressive art nouveau building to produce an extraordinary relaxation and conference hotel.
