Erfurt tourist information
Erfurt, the city at the green heart of Germany, was originally founded by Boniface in 742 AD. In the Middle Ages its location at the crossroads of several major trade routes made it an important trade centre and it also became a major university city. The heritage of this prosperous heyday lives on today in many lovingly-restored historical buildings. Erfurt has one of Germany’s best preserved medieval city centres, with sights including magnificent Renaissance buildings, half-timbered houses and the houses on the famous Krämerbrucke (Grocers’ Bridge).
