Darmstadt tourist information
This is where Germany strives to be Italy," was Kaiser Josef II's succinct description of Darmstadt and its environs. The former small royal residence has now become a large and modern city that keeps its rich cultural heritage very much alive. The Mathildenhöhe artists' colony established in the city's heyday still survives, for example. It earned Darmstadt its reputation as a city of art and centre of the Jugendstil or Art Nouveau movement. The city also lies at the Bergstrasse, a beautiful and sunkissed wine-growing region.
Jagdschloss Kranichstein, built in 1578 as a hunting seat by Landgrave Georg I. The hunting museum in the schloss has a rich collection of hunting arms and equipment from the period up to 1769. Many historical paintings illustrating the important role that hunting played in the life of the princes of the Baroque era.
The Arts in Darmstadt - Darmstadt is a city of culture where the arts are an important element of the entire lifestyle. Come and enjoy a relaxed weekend with comfortable accommo-dation and plenty of cultural treats!
