
Celle tourist information
700 years city history is alive in Celle. The closed historic town centre contains more than 500 half timbered houses from the 16th 17th and 18th century. Incomparable sights are present from the times Celle was ducal residence: The duke’s castle which’s building began in 1292, the castle’s chapel from 1470 with an unique equipment from times before reformation started and the oldest still running baroque theatre of Germany. Celle is the city in which tradition and open-mindedness for new ideas established an own culture. The harmonic of generously formed snug inner courts, places and facades side by side show as time ran by and is still very fascinating. Typical for this city are hospitality and charming hotels. The cafés are very homely, the wine cellars cosy and the restaurants offer international and regional specialties; Life is pulsating in the harmony of a traditional framework city. There is a lot to notice and experience in the city with its 72.000 inhabitants.
In unique atmosphere Hanovarian stallions show their proficiency. Backround of this experience are 250 years of equestrian tradition. A lot of horse specific games and shows such as Hungarian mail or roman races are waiting for you.
Robert Simon, galerist and art collector proves in Celle that it is definitely possible having a museum opened around the clock. Robert Simon is operating the museum honorary since 1995 and donated a considerable part of his private collection to the Robert Simon Art Foundation on January 1st 2001.
Agnes von Landsberg from the house Wettin, daughter in law of the duke of Sachsen, Henry the lion, is founder of the Cloister. After the legendary description of the Wienhausen chronicle the foundation should have occurred in 1221 in Nienhagen; Just 10 years later the cloister was misplaced to Wienhausen for some mysterious reasons. But there is no documented proof for that; besides that the existence of the nun-convent is already testified for 1229 by a document of bishop Konrad II, who also officially confirmed the foundation in Wienhausen in 1233 and transmitted all responsibilities for the nearby, since middle of the 11th century, located “Archidiakonatskirche” with all its property and cells in surrounded villages to the cloister.
As winner of the gold medal of the federal competition 2001, Celle was chosen to represent Germany on a European basis. Even if there is not a lot to see so far, the preparations for the competition are running high to be able to present the European jury Celle’s garden beauties in August. Especially the old part of town will bloom appropriately in every way.
